Pedal Auction: vintage DOD Buzz Box Sub-Octave+Fuzz/Distortion/Blue Noise/Ring Mod-Melvins/MXR

Pedal Auction Description: c.1994-1996 DOD 'Buzz Box' FX33 Sub Octave & Fuzz/Distortion a super RARE all original USA made pedal! born from the sick tones of Melvins guitarist King Buzzo!a sub-octave (a la MXR Blue Box) and thick fuzz/distortion slammed together in one box!make your amp screeeeam with joy! Starting at only 99 cents with no reserve!This is an auction for a very rare example of a DOD 'Buzz Box' sub-octave and fuzz overdrive box in one. I have owned this pedal for about 12 years and recently unearthed it in a box of long forgotten gems. From the crazy lettering to black and yellow 'dripped on' paint job, it makes an impression before you even plug it in. And wait until you plug it in! Only a handful of these were made as it was way too wicked for your average DOD customer...scroll below to hear why! This used to belong to the guys in Soul Asylum and I got it from their former guitar tech when he went to sell some of their old pedals for them. This one has been well cared for and not really see the ravages of the stage life. As you can see it has a couple of spots of cosmetic wear but no velcro or modification has been done to it in the least. It functions perfectly as it was designed and it is quite a wild ride! Man, I gotta give it up to DOD for making such a sick and twisted pedal as this one. It sounds insane on guitar and even more sick on bass, keys, or drum machines. It is great for getting an evil doom rock, metal, or aggressive sound but it also works great as a psyche/noise/experimental unit to pull out weird responses from gear that you would not otherwise find. Experimental musicians love this pedal for good reason. It is wicked what sounds it will pull out with tons of ring modulation, synth warbles, and stuttering frequencies that are one of a kind. It is really fun to mess around with and actually tracks quite a bit better than the original vintage MXR Blue Box I own (that it was sort of based on). Scroll down to see the hi-res photos of it and click on the soundfile to give it a listen. You will not regret it!This pedal supposedly was born when a DOD pedal designer fell in love with Buzz Osbourne's guitar tones on the Melvins record 'Eggnog' and sought him out to reverse engineer a pedal to get that tone. Supposedly his tone was from a vintage 70's MXR Blue Box Sub Octave Generator pedal and vintage Pro Co Rat, so the designer set to work copying the schematic and jumping off into the strange and unique design this ended up as. A decade and a halg before the high end noise pedals built by companies like Death by Audio came along, this was by far the craziest thing on the scene. While I doubt that Osbourne ever saw a penny from the design, it has been a cult classic that many pedal collectors have chased. And now it can be yours!Controls: Heavy (distortion/octavized signal blend), Buzz (distortion gain), Saw (high e.q.), Thrust (overall output level)From the manual: "The FX33 Buzz Box is known as 'the mother of all distortion pedals.' Inspired by the legendary Melvins guitarist, King Buzzo, the FX33 takes its incredibly nasty distortion to new and dangerous depths by adding an octavizer. This octavizer takes the distortion signal and drops it down two octaves -- producing an out-of-control chainsaw growl -- and allows you to mix this with the regular distortion sound."Historical context: The Melvins are widely cited as the favorite band of a young Kurt Cobain. It is unclear when the FX33 was first developed, relative to Kurt's death in April 1994 and relative to the Dunlop reissue of the MXR Blue Box. However, given the success of the FX69 Grunge pedal, DOD management may have perceived that a pedal associated with the Melvins might likewise become desirable, even if King Buzzo never officially endorsed it.I love the sound of this pedal! It has so much juicy sub-fuzz-distortion sludge pouring out of it, it cannot be beat with any one pedal.
